A well known personality of Assam with a very strong social base. Since his student’s life, he is associated in social, political and educational activities in the State.
Inspired by his father who Late Padma Nath Sarmah who was RSS activist, Dr Sarmah was involved in student’s politics and started his career in politics as one of the top AASU leaders of the State. He was one of top AGP Leaders in the State Politics having a uniformly bright academic career. He started his political career while he was in school since the year 1970. He was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly from Sipajhar LAC and continued for a period of 20 years as Member of the Assembly up to 2006. He has a strong command over his followers and still he is active in Assam Politics.

Dr. Sarmah was the key person who had initiated Assam Movement in Mangaldai against the Bangladeshi Immigrant.

Family Background :
Father Late Padma Nath Sarmah was a freedom fighter. He was active Congress volunteer. In the year 1938, he left his study and actively participated in the freedom movement. He was also associated with Sangha Parivar and attended ITC held in Mangaldai Town. His associates were Narendra Dev Shastri, Upen Bhuyan, Jogen Chakraborty and all of them organized some ITC in the rural area of District of Darrang. He was also closed associate of Late Tirtha Nath Sarmah who was State President of Vishya Hindu Parishad.

3. In 1991, he was reelected from Sipajhar LAC with securing 48,000 votes and won the election with a margin of 30,000 votes
4. In 1996, won the election by securing 46,000 votes
5. In 2001, won the election by securing 49,000 votes
6. In 2006, lost the election, however he secured 48,000 votes
7. In 2011, he contested the election as Independent Candidate but secured 49,000 votes

Dr Sarmah is an inborn orator. He is a good public speaker and his performance in Assembly Debate was always given well publicity by the Media in Assam. As Minister he was influential Government Spokesman in the Assembly and while he was Opposition, his strong attack on Congrass was highly praised by the Public.

Dr Sarmah is a active political leader of the State of Assam with a very strong mass-based in the District of Darrang in North Bank of Assam. He always takes active part in all the important social issues of the state and participates in the debates in most of the local electronic Medias.
